Tiberias — Tveria in Hebrew — is one of the four holy cities of Judaism, located on the western shore of the Sea of Galilee (Lake Tiberias, the Kinneret), 200 meters below sea level. With about 48,000 inhabitants, it offers a unique setting: fresh water, surrounding mountains (Golan to the east, Galilee to the west), millennial spiritual heritage, mild winter climate. For buyers seeking a waterside pied-à-terre, tourist investment or retirement residence, Tiberias deserves special attention.
Founded in 18-20 AD by Herod Antipas in honor of Roman emperor Tiberius, the city quickly became one of the main centers of Judaism after the destruction of the Second Temple. It was in Tiberias that the Jerusalem Talmud was compiled. The city houses the tombs of Rambam (Maimonides), Rabbi Meir Baal Haness and Rabbi Yohanan ben Zakai. Destroyed by an earthquake in 1837 then rebuilt, Tiberias has crossed the ages with its spiritual identity intact.
Today, Tiberias is a resort town with strong tourist dimension (Jewish, Christian and Muslim pilgrimage, wellness tourism), with mixed population and economy based on tourism, fishing and services. Recent real estate projects by the lake are gradually transforming its face.
